Flash Stories & Poetry Day 46: Lyric "Truest Love"

Hey, everyone.

So, yesterday's riddle turned out alright. Unfortunately, I'm still feeling depressed so today's poem might likewise be dark and drab.

Wheel of Genres, turn, turn, turn! Tell me the genre I will discern!

Today's style is... Lyric.

I looked at the last lyric I wrote, the High School Crush one from day 20. It was nice and talked about "love." So, I'll give that whirl this time. But, since I'm still in a dark mood, guess what? It's going to be a depressing poem about love... or at the least unexpected.

Thirty minutes on the clock: 30:00. And... go.

For whom doth my heart sing and meet my love,
That one maiden for whom my heart is behove?
In sooth, she is a lass of utmost value,
With mild wit, strong virtue, and a beauty, too?

Nay, I can't say, for no such girl is part
And privy to the depths of my heart.
So, what then is my dearest love, that force
Which gives life meaning and secures the course?

Two desires claim not my heart but my mind,
They claim my life and put me in a bind;
One desire is for my art, that blighting,
Biting, blessing style known as writing.

Within the craft and smithing of words,
That is where I can find one of my lords;
But what of the other? What other desire
Could claim me and set my soul afire?

Why, that desire is for one above all,
A temptation that has made many men fall;
My greatest yearning is for liberty,
Aye, my greatest desire is to be free.

I look through the world and see naught but chains,
People leading lives trapped within reins;
What would I do for freedom is the question,
Why, I would surrender all my possessions.

The freedom to write is what I desire most,
That would be a life worthy of boast;
Losing this freedom is what I fear,
I cannot surrender that which is most dear.

Unfortunately, I can't say stop the clock as I definitely wrote past time. I also got distracted toward the end with a phone call and then I got sucked back into the job search. But, this poem, some parts of it are pretty muddled and just sort of "enh..." But there are other parts that are really good. This could be reworked into something dynamite.

Also, it's 100% true. I don't have a girlfriend, and my greatest desire is to the have the freedom to write, but looking for and having a job is causing me a lot of distress. You should see my eyes; I have these huge bags under them. But, I think a lot of the poetry I've written recently about my money and writing woes say more than my eyes ever could.

But anyway, that's it for today. If you want to use the wheel I made, you should be able to access it here. Also, I reworked my Patreon page, so why not give it a look and consider becoming my patron. I would appreciate it.

Keep writing, my friends.

Flash Stories & Poetry Day 20: Lyric "High School Crush"

Hey, everyone.

I did have a witty introduction for this post today, but I've completely forgotten what it was. Probably just had something to do with my high school reunion being today. Seriously, wish me luck and stuff. I'm pretty nervous. I didn't sleep well last night. But I have been thinking more about the weekly themes and I think that it would be a good idea, but how would I pick them and how would I keep track? Does it even matter? Questions for later. Anyway, today I am using the poetry wheel, so let's give this sucker a spin.

Wheel of Genres, turn, turn, turn! Tell me the genre I will discern!

Today's style is... Lyric! Huh, have I written a lyric before? I want to say I have, but for the life of me, I can't remember. To make matters worse, I looked up lyric, and Wikipedia was no help at all. I looked up a few examples of a lyric, and those barely helped as well. Turns out, there's no one poetic form, line length, or rhythm; the only restriction is that the topic has to be about personal feelings. I thought about doing my feelings of regret again, but lyrics tend to be a little more romantic than all that, so instead I think I will write about my high school crush.

Thirty minutes on the clock: 30:00. And... go!

This is to my darling, my high school crush,
That one girl who made me nervous and flush;
But who was that lass that held such power
Under whose gaze I did shake and cower?

Was she not a girl from my middle school,
'Pon whom for many a year I did drool?
Nay, I think not; I did not know her well,
And for her I would not suffer the bell.

Was she of my grade, a dame who I once
Hated, with whose humors I thought a dunce?
But that relates to many girls in the class,
There were many I mistook for an ass.

Then was it an underclassman for whom
I would have wanted to be her groom?
Aye! That seems right. But which of the three
Did I truly think was the girl for me?

Was she a slender brunette who drives me
Crazy like no one else with all her glee?
Or, was she a buxom brunette
With a temper that made her quite a threat?

Nay, I believe she was the buxom blonde;
Aye, of her charm and wit I was most fond,
But to be fair, I was not into her hair,
Rather I wanted to see her laid bare!

It was her body that did me in,
With her butt and breast, I wanted to sin.
Alas, my desires came to naught,
I did not pursue her as one ought.

Ten years past, and I have forgotten her.
In sooth, that is what I truly prefer.
'Tis true, nothing so romantic as a high school sweetheart,
But without indelible love, we are all forced to part.

Stop the clock! Phew! One minute left. I didn't think that would take so long. And before you ask, it's pretty true hence why I didn't use names. And other things I did simplify quite a bit; poetic license and all that. But for the most part, it's pretty accurate. And I'm sure you noticed that some lines are not the right lengths. Yeah, I was running out of time and wanted to finish, so I rushed it a bit. And I really wanted to work in those last two lines, so... yeah.

But anyway, that's it for today. If you want to use the wheel I made, you should be able to access it here. Flash Stories & Poetry Day 1: Lyric "Debt"

Hey, everyone.

Today is the first day I begin my flash story and poetry challenge/discipline. The rules are simple: using a website called "Wheel Decide," I created a writing genres wheel full of fiction and non-fiction genres along with poetry styles. I give the sucker a spin, and whatever it lands on, I have thirty minutes to write something within the boundaries of that genre. I have 27 unique genres on the wheel at this time and I'm not against adding more. For those times I get something like "poetry--villanelle" or "poetry--narrative," I will stop where I'm supposed to and continue the poem another day. Hopefully, it ends up being a day where that topic again. Alright, let's begin.

Wheel of genres, turn, turn, turn! Tell me the genre I should discern!

Today's Topic is... Poetry--Lyric. And according to Wikipedia, a lyric is a "formal type of poetry which expresses personal emotions or feelings, typically spoken in the first person." Alright, let's give this a-go. Thirty minutes on the clock: 30:00. And... go!

I drown in waters deep,
They turn me into a creep;
For waters they are none,
But rather a risk of my fun.
These waters may be my own tears,
For I cannot hold back my fears;
For where I drown is personal debt,
The coined conditions haven't been met.

Fool was I to seek a degree,
Naught but words on leaf from tree;
Guidance was I lacking,
My true path took the sacking;
"Go to college and t'will be right,"
Now I find myself in dire plight.
I am not by the world forsaken,
T'was my reason that was shaken.

Lo Uncle Sam is a patient collector,
To no other man would I want to be debtor;
Nay, community banks are worse,
Money monthly due is the curse.
But lo, this burden not so heavy,
I feel no brunt of levy;
What hath done me in
Was my own hubris and sin.

Dealt with the Devil did I
Sticking my thumbs into hemlock pie;
Sweet words and easy work
Answered my greediest quirks.
A thousand lost in a week,
Now I mewl like the meek;
Begging God for pardon and peace
To bring my burden to a cease.

Justice will find the cur who wronged me so,
And his soul be slaughtered like a doe;
Cursed am I to find suitable labor,
Wherein Benjamins will call me neighbor.

Stop the clock! Seven minutes yet to go, but I really don't think I can write any more. I wanted that last quatrain to go ABAB, but who knows how long that would've taken or even if it would've been as "satisfying" an ending as what I wrote. To be honest, this was a little difficult to write because it is all true. I mean, I simplified the issue a bit, but for the most part, it is true. What lessons can be learned from this poem: 1. Don't go to college, 2. Don't take out a loan you can't pay back, and 3. Don't believe ads on Craigslist promising to pay you for posting ads.

But what can I learn from writing the poem? Well, it took me less than 30 minutes to write a decent poem in full. Perhaps if I enforced a time constraint on all my writing I could write a hell of a lot more. And it would help me gauge my time overall.

But anyway, that's it for today. If you want to use the wheel I made, you should be able to access it here. And if you have the time, please check out my books for sale on Amazon which you can find through my author page. The link is below. See you tomorrow.

Keep writing, my friends.
